What is "Taste of the Space"?

Week 1

The ENGR 2192 Instructors decided to incorporate these set of activities the first week to expose students earlier to the first set of tools that would be used in the class projects. The three activities were 3D printers, laser cutters, and woodworking:

Week 2

For week 2 of class, students continued with their woodworking activity to complete their birdhouse. The skills they learned will be helpful for their next project.

End results

Here are the results from the activity. The bird house on the far left was built by Mr. Hodge. The other designs were constructed by students. Not bad for many of the student's first time.




Final reflections/overall thoughts

ENGR 2192 Students, please keep the following in mind with working on Project 1 - Building with hand tools.

During week 2 class , the students reflected and discussed their thoughts regarding the woodworking exercise.
  • Be careful
  • Didn’t look like the example
  • Mistakes hard to fix -> or redoing
  • Being very careful with initial cuts -> goes a long way 
  • Precision
  • Work with the materials that are given -> making accommodations
  • Knowing what to expect in advance is helpful

  • The first project usually looks like this. See if now if makes a difference.

 1) Process The first step with this project for me was deciding on what I would make, so that I could begin to plan out how to design it in fusion. I wanted to keep things somewhat simple so that I wasn't overwhelmed with the project, but at the same time I wanted to try new things so that I could continue learning and experimenting with fusion. I decided to make a coaster with a topographical rim. The sketch for this was easy enough, as I have 3 past projects worth of fusion experience. Once I was done with the sketch, I followed the tutorial for using the "manufacturing" workspace to add tools and toolpaths for the CNC. After that, I had Ryan check my toolpaths for any problems (I think he ended up changing one of the toolpaths and the tool used for it) and then met up with Dawson who helped me with working the actual CNC. Introducing Ryan

  Hi, welcome to ENGR 2192 Intro to Making. I’m Ryan, the CSI MakerSpace supervisor and prototype technician. It feels like an appropriate title, as I dig creating and enjoying helping others get their make on. I crested year 7 at Trinity now and am in awe at what our maker community has grown into. What was once just a room full of old tools is now a legit modern workshop with a vibrant community. My role has evolved from acquirer and organizer of tools to empowerer of the make. Certainly a fun, cup filling type role. It makes me happy that this group has decided to give making a go. Y’all are maker class iteration 7. A lucky number if ever there was one. Great things are expected. The MakerSpace was busy last year. On top of the usual maker class, we added an advanced making class and hosted a Summer of Lathing About. Adam Edelbi Project 3: 3D Printer

 1) Process     - The process for this project was mainly in fusion. I first went through most of the tutorials listed on the project instructions. After I felt like I had a decent grasp on the fusion sculpting process, I began by creating a rough shape of the boat by pulling up the front side. I found a reference picture online that I really liked, and it gave me the idea to add the little building on top of the boat. I had to add in another shape and then a third for the roof. I used the bridge tool to cut out a hole through the middle, and with that my fusion part was done. From there I just sent it over and let the printer do the rest of the work.
