Thor Yeary Proposal: Mixed Techniques

Proposal Statement

I plan on making a dice tower for tabletop games. I already made a dice tray this semester, which was nice, but I now want to try make something that serves a similar purpose but has the potential of being way cooler! I want to be able to attach this dice tower onto castle-like walls so that the dice don't go too far once they come out of the bottom.

Advise

So far, I have gotten the chance to speak to Dawson and Ryan about this project. Ryan helped me figure out how my sketches should look for when I laser cut the walls of my project. Dawson gave me a couple tips regarding supports for 3d printing, including that I should use normal supports instead of tree supports because of how thin my overhang areas are.

(Visualization of what the walls should look like, I'm glad I did this because I realized there were a couple issues with this design)

Rough game plan

First, I will make prototypes of my dice tower and walls to ensure the pieces will fit together and the size proportion feel right. I will also make sure that dice can consistently make it through the tower without getting stuck. Once I know that the concept of my project is sound, I will try to add bits of details to make the design look more like a castle by extruding slight divots in the sides of the tower in a brick pattern. If I'm able, I will try to add a Game of Thrones banner onto the side of the tower for fun.

Needs:

I will be using the Epilog Fusion Edge and Rayjet R500 laser cutters for this project. I will cut .19in thick pieces of wood to create the walls. Additionally, I'll be using a Bambu Labs X1 Carbon printer to 3d print the dice tower, using whatever fun-colored PLA filament I can find

(Draft of dice tower, details will hopefully be added after testing)

Comments

  1. Nice project and it looks like you're well on your way. The emboss tool in fusion can help create the brick effect on your stacked tower. here's a link to a video describing the tool: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aAjhTFxi2_w
